Robert “Bob” J. Skolyak, 78 of Daisytown, PA died Monday, February 25, 2013 in Nevaeh Cove, Charleroi, PA. He was born September 21, 1934 in Washington, PA a son of the late Joseph and Josephine Fedis Skolyak. In 1999 he retired from the Gutman Oil Co., Charleroi where he was employed doing maintenance and mechanical work. He retired with 42 ½ years of service. Mr. Skolyak enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening and tinkering in his garage. He was always willing to help anyone in anyway he could. On October 15, 1955 he married Patricia Elliott Skolyak who died February 1, 2010. Surviving are three children, Russell Skolyak (Renee) of Daisytown, Kathleen Dietz (Frank) of Olathe, KS and Susan Coleman (George) of Daisytown; five grandchildren, April Santory (John Collins), Jessica Skolyak, Robert Dietz (Cherish), Tracy Mazon (Chase) and George “Sam” Coleman (Megan Kolick); eight great grandchildren, James and Aden Ritter, Odin and Liam Collins, Nathan and Lucas Mazon, and Sara and Leah Dietz; one brother, Fred Skolyak (Maryann) of Washington, PA and several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents and wife is a granddaughter, Amber Skolyak and two brothers, John and Dave Skolyak.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday in the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, PA where a blessing service will be held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Paul Grunebach officiating. Entombment will follow in the LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, PA.

John Vierik, a 44 year old Austrian born white male, lived in their rented home with his wife, Albina, his step-sons; Joseph and Benjamin Skolyak; his son from a previous marriage, Paul Vierik; and his daughter with Albina, Hermene Vierik.  John immigrated to the United States in 1913.  The census record list Albina, Joe, Paul, and Benjamin’s immigration year as 1921. However, Albina and her children from a previous marriage to George Skolyak (who were married abt. 1909 when Albina was 27); Maria, Joseph, Albina and Benjamin, arrived here in December of 1920.  The census also shows Paul as being born in Austria and immigrating here in 1921.

John and his step-son, Joe were both coal loaders working in a coal mine. At the time of the 1930 census John was not working but Joe was. All members of the family could read and write and were able to speak English, however in the home they spoke Slovakian. They are all listed as a naturalized citizens except for Hermene who was born in Pennsylvania. Paul, Benjamin and Hermene were all attending school at the time of the census.  Albina was a stay at home mom.

Their daughter, Eleanor, was born in Ohio.  Alfonse, who could not speak English, worked as a car washer for Street Ry Company while Albina stayed home to take care of their daughter.

Thirty year old Joseph Skolyak was a naturalized citizen who was born in Czechoslovakia. He lived with his 26 year old wife, Josephine (Fedis) Skolyak, who was born in Pennsylvania and their two sons; 5 year old Robert and 1 year old John who were both born in Pennsylvania. His 57 year old mother, Albina Tamini-Vierik, and his 55 year old step-dad, John Vierik, lived next door. All family member’s except for John lived in the same houses in 1935.

Joseph was an unemployed coal miner seeking work.  They survived on “other” income. His wife, Josephine, did not work outside of the home she had a 7th grade education.

John Vierik, who like his wife Albina, was born in Czechoslovakia. He was a naturalized citizen while Albina was listed as an “alien”.  Like his son-in-law, John was an unemployed coal miner seeking work who survived off “other” income.

John and Albina's daughter Hermene lived next door.  Hermene was 19 years old, married and running her household. She lived with her 9 month old son Marko Mandich, who like herself was born in Pennsylvania.  Hermene lived in the same house in 1935. She was not working but listing income from "other" sources.

In 1930 Newburgh Heights, Ohio, 55 year old Joseph Zika Sr. lived with his wife of 30 years, Bertha, who was 50 years old and their daughter, Mae, who was 20 years old.  His son, 28 year old Joseph Jr., and 22 year old daughter-in-law, Mary (Maria Skolyak), lived next door.  Joseph married Bertha when he was 25 and she was 20 years old.  Joseph Jr. was 25 when he married Mary who was 19 at the time. Joseph’s home was valued at $6,000 while his son’s home was valued at $3,500.

All five family members were born in Czechoslovakia as too were Joseph’s parent’s, his wife’s parents and his daughter-in-law’s parents.  Joseph immigrated to the United States in 1912 with his wife and two children.  Mary (Maria Skolyak) immigrated to the United States in 1919 (*Maria immigrated into the United States in December of 1920 with her mother, Albina Tamini-Skolyak, her sister, Albina Irene Skolyak, and her two brothers Joseph Skolyak and Benjamin Skolyak). All member’s of both households could read and write and could speak English however in their home they spoke Czechoslovakian (Slovak).
Joseph and his wife, Bertha, were not working during the 1930 census. Their daughter, Mae, was working as a bookkeeper for a auto garage.  Mary was not working either however her husband, Joseph Jr., worked as a repair man in his own garage which causes me to think his sister, Mae, was working for him.

Maria (aka Mary) was living with her husband, Joseph, her daughter Evelyn, and her in-laws Joseph and Bertha Zika in Newburgh Heights, Ohio in 1940 in the same home they lived together 5 years earlier.  Joseph Zika, the head of the house, was born in Czechoslovakia around 1875.  With an 8th grade education Joseph, a naturalized citizen, worked as a laborer on roads. Betha Zika, Mary’s mother-in-law, was also born in Czechoslovakia around 1880. Also a naturalized citizen with an 8th grade education she worked in the home.

Maria’s husband, Joseph Zika Jr., like Maria was born in Czechoslovakia around 1902. A naturalized citizen like his parents and Maria, Joseph worked as a machine operator painting steal.  His education level is listed as H-2. Maria, also with a 8th grade education, worked as a machine operator for a textile company.  She was 32 years old in April of 1940.  Maria and Joseph lived with their 8 year old daughter, Evelyn, who was born in Ohio. She was in the 4th grade in 1940.

Albina Tamini's Obituary

Mrs. Albina Skolyak Vierik, 75, of 47 Elizabeth Street, Washington, died at 1:30 pm Friday, Feb. 7, 1958, in Washington Hospital after a brief illness. Her health had been rather poor for the past 2 years.

Mrs. Vierik was born in Czechoslovakia Dec 15, 1882, and came to the United States in December 1920. She had resided in Washington since 1930.

She was a member of St. Hilary's Roman Catholic Church of Washington and the Slovak Catholic Union.
She married John Vierik in March 1920 (*March 7, 1921). He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Skolyak and Paul Vierik, both of Washington; four daughters, Mrs Mary Zika of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs Albina Wheldon of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Hermene Tutay of Washington; and Mrs. Violet Husarchik of Ontario, Pennsylvania and a sister, Hermina Mesjar of Jefferson, Ohio and 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren all survive.

On the marriage license of George’s wife, Albina, to her second husband, John Vjerik, she states her first husband passed away on Feb. 25, 1920. She says her father’s name is Benjamin Skoliak and her mother is Maria Waditcka. There could be an error of names or of relationship. Her father’s name maybe Benjamin Tamini (the person filling out the form may not have realized Skolyak is her name by previous marriage). It’s also possible she considered George’s father her own. She indicates that her parents are alive in Czechoslovakia.
